Provident: Sailing the West Coast of Scotland

As crew aboard Provident, a 1924 Brixham trawler, I took part in a ten-day sailing expedition along Scotland’s west coast. The voyage combined traditional seamanship with challenging conditions, including navigating through Storm Floris on our second day at sea. Responsibilities included working on deck, handling sails, and learning the ropes in shifting weather. The journey also offered opportunities to explore remote locations — from the island of Rum to uninhabited sea lochs and shorelines — where we swam in rivers, foraged, and gained a deeper connection to the landscape. The experience demanded adaptability, teamwork, and resilience in the face of unpredictable elements while sailing a historic vessel through some of Scotland’s most rugged waters.
