Sail Britain: West Coast Conservation Week
As First Mate and Expedition Co-Lead with conservation biologist Lucie Machin, I helped shape and deliver a week-long Sail Britain voyage exploring marine and coastal conservation along the Argyll and Mull coastlines. Our itinerary included visiting seagrass and oyster restoration projects in Loch Craignish with Sea Wilding, learning about forest restoration on Mull, trawling for microplastics, and listening to the underwater soundscape with a hydrophone. On board, we facilitated discussions and learning around conservation, while under sail our plans were guided by the wind. The expedition combined practical seamanship with field-based environmental learning, fostering a strong sense of connection and shared commitment to the natural world.
